Last year at Sundance, we saw Melanie Lynskey in the usual type of film role that she is offered by casting directors - the fourth or fifth-billed one. However, in 2012, the director of 'Hello I Must Be Going' saw that she had served as a working actress for nearly fifteen years, without coming close to getting the lead in a project that would be in the spotlight, and opted to let her carry a motion picture. It has been a challenge that has prompted positive and negative results from film critics, but it throws open the question that the fans of this under exposed actress (myself included) have been asking for years - will Lynskey finally locate a path to more leading roles being on offer to her? Hopefully, yes; realistically, no. There has been no word on a distribution deal yet, and until there is, Lynskey's ascent to the A-list remains in the realms of wish fulfilment for all those who were enthralled by her portrayal of Pauline Parker back in 1995, and decided that she deserved to get stardom. Even if there is a strong prospect of Americans moviegoers getting the chance to see it, Hollywood may well reward her co-lead, Christopher Abbott, with the subsequent career-building benefits, instead of her. I believe she is long overdue for leading lady status, but will Tinseltown's movers-and-shakers?
